William and Kate pay their respects to the fallen.....

On the last leg of their Singapore visit, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today visited the Commonwealth War Cemetery and Memorial at Kranji.  They are of a similar age to many of those who are buried there, most of whom died during the fight against the Japanese invaders during the second world war.

Kranji is managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and, like most of their cemeteries, is well looked after.  But there are some soldiers and civilians, killed in war, who are buried in graves that are not tended by the CWGC.  One of these is in Malaysia, the next stop for William and Kate.  The Cemetery at Batu Gajah, a small town near Ipoh, is where many civilians and soldiers who died during the Malayan Emergency (from 1948 to 1960) are buried.  Known as 'God's Little Acre' it has a memorial put up by the Perak Planters Association.  The first three people murdered by the Communist Terrorists at the beginning of hostilities in 1948 are buried there.

In 'Merdeka' Alick visits this cemetery to say goodbye to a friend.  Information on the Cemetery, including photgraphs and a list of many of those buried there, can be found on the Roll of Honour website.
